Hyper……
I have a little story that I would like to share with you all. It happened to me about 17 years ago but still to this day gives me a chuckle.
It was a Saturday afternoon and my sister had been invited to a jewellery party at her friends house, so took me along to have a look. Now, I had been a Diabetic at this stage for about 5 years but still living in denial a little, so hadn’t eaten any lunch and the party was at 2pm.
Upon arriving we sat down and being the shy person I am, when offered anything to eat or drink, declined, which in hindsight was a really silly thing to do. Anyway, the demonstration commenced and we were all focused on the things being shown to us when suddenly I began to feel quite strange, now you have to remember I was in denial, well, feeling strange went to a full on Hypo. Upon realising that is what was going on it had really taken control and all I could manage to do was knock my sisters arm and as she looked at me slurred the word ‘lolly’. She quickly reacted by asking for a sweet drink as I don’t think I was capable of chewing a lolly. However. it was the demonstraters reaction that, to this day my sister and I still laugh about, because in the commotion that followed she said “quick get a paper bag, she’s hyperventilating”. Now, just let me say that I am aware that she obviously wasn’t experienced with a Diabetic, but I’m sure that from that day on she would know what to do in the same situation.
I hope this story brings a smile to your face, as it still does to my sister and myself, although I am aware that it was a serious situation at the time, but at the same time, a humorous one.
I have now stopped living in denial and am now looking after myself at long last, athough I am now having to deal with the serious side effects of my neglect, but thats another story….
