My Diabetes Pregnancy is a website and community all about becoming and being a mother who happens to have diabetes.
The information you receive about pregnancy, what to expect and how to prepare, is vitally important when you have diabetes. Finding people who understand, and having strong support from loved ones and healthcare professionals, is key. Planning your pregnancy and learning as much as possible, as early as possible, has been shown to make a massive difference – to your experiences of becoming and being a mother; and to positive outcomes.
Things have certainly improved when it comes to diabetes management, and healthy pregnancies and babies for women with diabetes. But we still have things to do to reduce the risks, and make the journey better. At My Diabetes Pregnancy, we believe that we can do better. Despite all of the risks and the increased chances of things going wrong, women with diabetes can and should have wonderful pregnancies, remarkable births and spectacular lives with their babies and children. We believe in having the choice to become a Mother; and that with better understanding, better information, better technology, better services and better access to support from health care teams and other women with diabetes, we can create better experiences and better outcomes for all women living with diabetes and their babies.
My Diabetes Pregnancy was founded by Helen Edwards, a person living with type 1 diabetes since 1979, PhD Candidate looking at the journey of pregnancy and motherhood for women with diabetes; diabetes writer and blogger; diabetes advocate and diabetes educator and counsellor. Most importantly Helen is mum to 3 beautiful sons. You can read Helen’s first part of this PhD study here and find out how you can contribute to the next stage of this research here.
“When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1979, I was told that along with all the terrible complications of diabetes, I would never have children and if I dared, they would be born deformed or even worse, stillborn…this messed with me greatly, but I was determined to prove them wrong. And prove them wrong I did, with these 3 beautiful boys, born in 1993, 1998 and 2008. I learned then that a healthy baby is entirely possible when you have diabetes”. Helen Edwards
